As mentioned, I’d love the blog portion of this site to become a place to have some baseball discussion, so I’ll kick things off and at the same time test out the poll feature. On that note, below are two polls, one for who you think is the best free agent signing of the offseason so far, and one for who you think is the worst:
For my money, I think the Hanley signing has been the best of the winter so far. Surprised the Sox only had to go 4 years to get him, and with his injury history that limits their risk. On the flip side, I think the Mariners way overpaid for Nelson Cruz.
I like the Sandoval deal more than the Hanley deal – they will love him in Boston and he will love the Green Monster. I predict Hanley’s tenure in Boston will not go well for a variety of reasons. I almost voted for Liriano because I think it’s important the Pirates are keeping things intact. Worst deal is a no-brainer for me, it’s Lester – too long of a deal, a very good SP in my opinion but having watched him against various incarnations of Yankee lineups over the years I was never blown away by his stuff.

Interesting. I almost voted Liriano too – he’d be my runner up. Sandoval’s deal I’m “meh” on – not bad, not great either for a player of his questionable conditioning/work ethic reputation. Disagree on Lester being the worst; any SP has risk but he made a change in his approach this year that I think is sustainable and he’s had no injury history.
